Hypnosis is a state of being during which one experiences hyper-focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness, and an enhanced receptivity to suggestion. Through the use of special techniques and language patterns, a hypnotherapist can guide you into a state of deep relaxation during which time your attention and concentration will be highly focused, leading to a heightened state of awareness called trance. In fact, your attention can be so focused while in hypnosis that things going on around you are temporarily blocked from your awareness. While in trance, you can focus your attention on specific thoughts, tasks, or goals you want to achieve.
The use of hypnosis in this way for therapeutic purposes is known as hypnotherapy.
